Enjoy wine and whisky tasting and a rare chance to view a solo show of new works, by Nigel Grounds. Inspired by his native land, the rugged west coast of Scotland. About Nigel Grounds
Pulling his inspiration from Scotland's great scenic contrasts. From Skye with its rugged mountains and towering sea-cliffs, to the Western Isles with their isolated crofts perching in Machair, overlooking vast empty beaches, while dark peaks circle turquoise seas; fishing and crofting villages. Nigel mainly creates dramatic works in oils, born out of a reaction to immediate surroundings, his intention is to his make scenes very recognisable without being photographic, offering a feeling of the place and ultimately lending spontaneity and drama to a memorable image. His work views the Scottish openness with a dramatic brush/knife rejecting the clutter of today’s world! Describing Scotland in her purest form, focusing on her basic beauty. Firstly I have to say a huge thank you to Joe Hendry, who upon just dropping off his paintings at the SECC ended up staying and helping me hang the exhibition! His Kiltie prints were a sell out again this year, what is it about men in kilts! There was a real buzz about the show, with a huge amount of interest in our stand, and Kate and I both enjoyed our "trip out to the big city!" We expanded from just original art this year and introduced ceramics by Alex Johanssen, everybody loves her quirky little penguins, and glass by Kathryn Neal which was a huge success, especially her "10 green bottle" (more in stock in Drymen October 09). We had visits over the weekend from many of our artists we were exhibiting works by including Ritchie Collins, Philip Raskin, Joe Hendry, Iona Crawford and Derek Collins, all keen to support us and meet old and new collectors of their work. Dot uses a vivid palette to describe the ever changing atmosphere that surrounds her in the highlands, using a range of techniques from palette knife to dragging the paint with decorating brushes, depending on the subject matter.
She is intrigued by the effects of the weather on the rugged landscape of the west coast and the Hebrides, and often includes dwelling places in her paintings - people working the land and the climate, and the promise of shelter and hospitality in unlikely places. She lives in Inverness with her husband and 3 children. Summer Scorcher June McCann - Friday, July 10, 2009
It's hard to believe its almost 8 Months since we opened our doors in Drymen and are still amazed at the amount of visitors the area attracts. The gallery is still developing to what we want by adding new crafts, designers and products all the time, especially our new baby "the whisky". Cameron is just in his element passing on his knowledge and June and Kate remain promising pupils, however not converted! Art"Summer Forecast" exhibition running 12 July - 05 SeptemberWe have a Scorcher for you this summer, with outstanding new works by all our gallery artists. In addition we are delighted to welcome our new artists Joyce Borland, Gordon Wilson, Kirsty Cohen and Erni Upton. Gordon Wilson
We had already sold out of Gordons work pre our Summer show, so thanks Gordon for some extra fantastic pieces! Gordon works predominately in oils, his subject matter ranges from quirky portraiture and obscure figurative to dynamic landscape. His expressive oil paintings are inspired by his native Scotland; whether dark and moody or an explosion of colour they reflect the ever changing moods of both the countryside and the artist himself. Read more about Gordon Wilson. Joyce Boreland
Born in Dumbarton, and still living in the area. It followed that the influence of the Colourists of the Glasgow School of Art would be a major inspiration in developing her style. Tutored at this Institute by Pete Howson, Neil Macdonald and Norrie Kirkham, she has specialised in the tonality of landscapes mainly in East and West Scotland. Read more about Joyce Boreland. Erni Upton
Erni's work is influenced by the Scottish Colourists, like them he spends most of his time on the West Coast of Scotland where the wonderful ever changing light and colours allows him to draw much of his inspiration. He works with both brush and knife; this enables him to depth and texture into his work. Read more about Ernie Upton. Kirstie Cohen
Although Kirstie is a new addition to our gallery in Drymen, we exhibited her amazing landscapes in her home territory last year at Inverness Airport. Her work lies within the context of the northern romantic landscape tradition, where she tries to convey the essence of land, sea and sky and express a sense of space light or mood of the moment rather than depict a specific location as this creates a boundary that restricts the process of developing the work. It is overall a more emotional cathartic. Read more about Kirstie Cohen. See our original scottish art section for more information on artists featured in our gallery.
