About Stronachie WhiskyBuilt in 1890 in rural Perthshire the Stronachie Distillery, under the ownership of Alexander McDonald, was classified as a ‘true Highland malt whisky’. For 30 years the distillery produced high quality whisky, becoming widely available in the marketplace thanks to successful distribution developed by Dewar Rattray. Significant events for Stronachie began in 1907 when the distillery was sold to Sir James Calder, a man with great expertise in the industry and who was proud to be associated with the brand. Despite this he chose to sell the distillery in 1926 to the Distillers Company Limited. Following this the prices of coal and grain soared, resulting in Stronachie being closed down and dismantled in 1930, a fate suffered by many similar distilleries. Today only an area of low stone walls remains of the original Stronachie Distillery. For many of the other distilleries closed at that time their story would have ended there, however Stronachie has been lucky enough to have a second life. In 2002 a project was launched to recreate the distincitve Stronachie malt. A surviving bottle from 1904 was used to match to another distillery still in production, one creating a malt which reflects the style, character and flavour of the original Stronachie whisky. And so, following this remarkable story, Stronachie is ‘The Lost Distillery’ no more and it is now distilled at Benrinnes Distillery in Speyside from small batches of Benrinnes casks. Stronachie is a new style of whisky: very small batch production with specially selected casks that vary for each batch. This results in a varied flavour journey that represents the individuality of casks while still representing the distillery character at its best. The Stronachie Single Highland Malt of today has in its character the heritage of a bygone age and as near as possible reflects the style and elegance of the Lost Distillery.
